Addiction & Compulsive Behaviours
Looking beyond the habit to find and heal what you are trying to soothe
Many people come to therapy feeling caught in patterns they cannot seem to shift, despite a genuine desire for change.Addiction is rarely just about the substance or behaviour itself. It often develops as a way of managing distress, regulating overwhelming emotions, or coping with experiences that have felt too painful, confusing, or isolating to process alone.
I work with individuals experiencing difficulties with alcohol, drugs, love and relationship addiction, codependency, disordered eating, and other compulsive behaviours that feel difficult to control.Together, we explore not only the behaviour, but what sits underneath it, including emotional patterns, relational experiences, and internal conflicts that may be maintaining the cycle.
Understanding the Pattern
Looking beneath the surface to find what your behaviour is trying to protect.
Compulsive behaviours often serve a psychological function, even when they are causing harm. They can offer temporary relief from anxiety or emotional overwhelm, create a sense of control or stability, or provide a way of escaping difficult thoughts and feelings.
For some, they become a way of managing experiences such as loneliness, shame, or disconnection when these feel too much to hold alone. In therapy, we begin to understand how these patterns developed and why they have persisted over time. This process is not about justifying the behaviour, but about making sense of it in a way that allows something different to emerge.
Moving Towards Recovery
Building a life that no longer depends on unhealthy coping strategies
Recovery isn't about perfection, and setbacks don't define your progress. As you begin to understand yourself with greater compassion, the need for compulsive behaviours often starts to lessen.Together, we'll work towards building healthier relationships, greater emotional awareness, and practical coping strategies that allow you to move forward with confidence, freedom, and hope.
